eBay

When done well, eBay is an easy way to make a quick bit of cash. From selling clothes you no longer wear because they no longer fit or simply don’t suit your current fashion taste, to old pieces of technology such as your first mobile phone, there is nearly always someone looking for that item you have stored away not being used.

On eBay you can either sell items via Auction or Buy Now.

Auction VS Buy Now

An auction is where you choose a starting to price and then for a specific period of time chosen by you, it will be on view to the people who search for what you are selling. They will then be able to bid on your items meaning if there is a lot of interest shown, you could end up with much more money that you imagined.

Whereas Buy Now is when you select a price you are happy for your item to go for. A person can then buy it straight away at that price. The listing can be listed for a maximum time of a month, and you can even set it so it will automatically relist if no interest has been shown.

Auctions

ProsCons
Potential to get more money than predictedBuyer has to wait for the auction to end
You can plan in advance when the auction will endCould take a while to recieve payment

Buy Now

ProsCons
Can be a quick processNo potential to get more than the original asking price
May attract more interest

How to sell on eBay

To ensure maximum profit there are a few simple tips to help you get more money.

  • High-quality pictures – Make sure the picture of your item is clear and has a nice background and that there are multiple of them. It is important to upload more than one image. If it is an item of technology, take a picture of the item turned on to proove it works, if it is a piece of clothing take a close up of the label to show the size.
  • Also, make sure you check the image before you upload it, you don’t want to turn out like the infamous lady who was clearly visible in her mirror next to where the item hung wearing no clothes!

  • Research – To get a good starting price for your item it is very important to do some research first. Have a look on eBay at other people selling the same/similar item as you. This way you can get an idea as to what people are willing to pay. It is also worth getting information about your product from the internet. For instance, if you are selling a phone, find out the specs regarding functions such as memory space and camera quality.

These rules seemed to work for me, as in the lead up to Christmas I managed to make just under £100 in a week by selling an 11 year old old Apple iPod Nano as well as an 8 year old Apple iTouch!

Rent out your spare room

If you have a spare room that is rarely used why not turn it into a bedroom and rent it out?

Doing this could be the perfect way to have an extra bit of income as well as potentially giving you a new friend!

In expensive areas such as London, there are always people looking for somewhere to live. Whether it be students who left finding their accommodation too late or simply people who are tired of commuting and are looking for somewhere to stay during the week.

Although it may add a little extra to your bills, in the long run, it could potentially be a great way to help you get near making an extra £1000 a month.

Rent out your driveway

Do you have an extra space on your driveway? If so, similar to renting out your spare room, another easy way to make money is by renting out your driveway. This is an easy, hassle free way of earning that bit more.

Whether it be during the daytime when your car is out of the way, or during the evening when people are looking to go for a night out. If you live in or near a town centre this could be ideal, and it won’t cost you a thing!

Turn yourself into a taxi driver

It is a well-known fact that on a Friday/Saturday night lots of people are wanting to leave the house in the search for a good night out. But a common argument is who’s going to drive?

By simply being a taxi driver for your friends and family for one weekend a month it is possible that you could make £200 (even without the tips). Although it will take time out of your life, if you enjoy driving and are wanting some extra cash being a taxi driver could be a great option.

The Disney Vault Secret

What is The Disney Vault?

The Disney Vault is a marketing scheme employed by Disney which essentially restricts which of their classics are available and when. Working in a rotation, the movies are locked away in ‘the vault’ for 8-10 years before being relaunched.

It first began in in 1944 when Disney re-released the 1937 classic Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs and today includes those films that are in the Platinum and Diamond film editions.

Films part of The Disney Vault:

  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  • Pinnochio
  • Fantasia
  • Dumbo
  • Bambi
  • Cinderella
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Peter Pan
  • Lady and The Tramp
  • Sleeping Beauty
  • One Hundred and One Dalmatians
  • The Jungle Book
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Beauty and The Beast
  • Aladdin
  • The Lion King

The perfect example as to why keeping an eye on The Disney Vault could be worth your time is the film Beauty and The Beast. In 2011 you could buy this film on Blue-Ray 3D for £24.99, it then got locked away and just two years later it was on Amazon for £74.99!

This is an easy way to make an extra bit of money, however, it will take a long period of time between spending the money to being able to actually make anything from it. If The Disney Vault appeals to you, it is important you keep track of what is currently in, and what is soon to be out of the vault.

An easy way to do this is to keep an eye on any special anniversaries coming up. For instance, Sleeping Beauty was released in 2014 to celebrate the 55th anniversary, in 2006 Babi was released for 70 days to celebrate the 70th anniversary of when Disney began to work on the movie and Peter Pan was released in 2013 to coincide with the 60yh Anniversary.

Another good tip is to be aware of current events as Disney are known to release films out of the vault for one-off occasions. An example of this is when Aladdin was released around the time of the death of actor Robin Williams, the actor who played the Genie. Another example is Walt Disney’s birthday (5th December 1901), when Bambi, his favourite film, is sometimes released.

Babysitting/Petsitting

Probably one of the most well-known ways of earning money is to babysit for your friends or for people in your village. Some people can offer good money for a few hours of playing with the kids, which when you think about it is a very easy way of making money.

And if you don’t like kids you can petsit instead, walking the dogs in your village or even taking care of them whilst your friends go away on holiday is a simple way of earning money to put towards your extra £1000 a month.

Download apps

There are many money making apps available on today’s market such as Swagbucks, InstaGC, Global Test Market and MySurvey.

We recently published an article about which are the most effective but essentially, the apps will give you money for completing everyday tasks such as watching videos and browsing the web.

Companies are always looking for feedback, so completing surveys is another great way of making money and in most cases, it will only take 10 minutes out of your day!

Bare in mind that apps like these can pay you money directly into your PayPal account, but are also likely to hand out gift vouchers such as Amazon.

Rent out your house for filming

Although this may be a hard one to find, looking for TV companies advertising to use someone’s house for filming is an easy way of making money as it doesn’t require you to do anything – except maybe tidy your house!

Well known soaps or even adverts are always looking to film in a real person’s house, this is as it can save them money on props and decoration materials.

Set up websites

There is always going to be someone looking to make a website to further their business/career but without the knowledge on how to do it.

Online website makers are very easy to use for the making of a basic website. Therefore, if you have the experience you can charge a high amount of money for just a couple of days work.

Your local driving instructor, hairdressers and more are great examples of potential clients.

Delivery driver

If you are someone who enjoys spending time outside, or even exercising why not become a delivery driver.

Companies such as Deliveroo are always on the search for new employees. They allow you to choose when and for how long you work and you can earn £16 an hour (not to mention tips).

The job involves riding your bike or motorbike to resturants, picking up a takeaway and delivering it to the customer.

This means this way of making money could be perfect if you already enjoy riding your bike in your spare time.

Offer home organising services

If you consider yourself an oragnised person and get pleasure out of keeping things clean and organised, why not offer your services to others?

There are plenty of people out there who simply don’t have the time or patience to sit and order their DVD collection in alphabetical order, or to colour code their wardrobe.

So why not do this for them? The idea of a tidy home is one many people seem to have whilst few manage to actually acomplish it.

Conclusion

It can be said that as there are so many effective ways to earn that bit of extra cash a month, there is the possibility that you may even be able to make more than £1000 if you put the work in!

Some ways, such as downloading certain apps, renting out your driveway or your spare room require little effort whereas some require more effort such as setting up websites, selling things on eBay or offering your services.

Depending on how much effort you want to put in, making an extra £1000, or maybe even more, is possible!
